Placentia was incorporated in 1926. Known as Orange Countys "baby city," its easygoing, smalltown atmosphere is a source of pride for the residents of the city. Covering approximately 7 square miles, its diminutive size is not an indication of its place within Orange County.
Like many other cities in the county, Placentia started out as an agricultural area. Latin for "a pleasant place", most of the current residents leave this fair city to work. Once back home, residents have several parks, a library, and the historic Santa Fe Plaza to visit.
Famous for being the location of the very first commercial "Valencia Orange" crops, Placentia secured its value within the area by becoming the host of the largest Valencia Orange grove in the country. This eventually contributed to the naming of "Orange County".
Although a disease called the "quick decline" wiped out the majority of orange groves in Placentia and nearby area cities, a population explosion in the 1950s, 60's and 70's secured continuing revenue for the city, thus ending Placentia's orange-packing business.
Popular estimates show that almost 3/4's of Placentia's nearly 50,000 citizens participate in civic activities, such as Little League and Heritage Day Festival. Placentia may be small, but it has huge character. No where else in Orange County will you find such affluent sections of town compliment older historic homes so well! |
