In the winter of 1887, a group of settlers attempted to found a small township called "Carlton" in what became northern Yorba Linda. Luring hopeful businessmen who were seeking land near a railroad, the settlers boasted of close water supplies which would be crucial to agriculture. No one knows how many people relocated to the area with dreams of bigger and better lives, but we do know one thing; It didn't last long. When the water turned into brackish gruel, and the railroad lines were not built, the new residents of Carlton fled. Some of the settlers lost all that they had and the town was deserted by 1896.
The land that was to become Yorba Linda belonged to a farmer named Bernardo Yorba who received the land in a grant from the Mexican Government sometime around 1834. Bernardo Yorba tirelessly worked the land and raised 20 children in his modest home.
Being passed down through the generations, the land eventually ended up in the hands of Porfirio Yorba who sold it in 1907 to the Janss Investment Co. whom developed it into a small town in 1909. Originally the town was much smaller than it is today, but like any city in Orange County, it grew into a thriving community by 1919.
1963 proved to be a trying year for the small town, as both the cities of Anaheim and Placentia attempted to annex the area. This was forcefully turned down and the city Yorba Linda continued to hold it’s own in the ever growing Orange County. Yorba Linda now offers many points of interest including easy access to several major visitor attractions such as Angel Stadium (home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm. A short one hour drive to the San Bernardino/San Gabriel Mountains are a provide outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, fishing and camping.
Developed as a family community, Yorba Linda residents voted to incorporate and become the OC’s 25th city in 1967. One of the early families to inhabit the area were the Nixons. Frank & Hannah Nixon and their sons, Harold & Richard, settled to a Yorba Linda home in 1912. Boasted as one of the most influential residents ever to come out of Yorba Linda, Richard M. Nixon, was the 37th president of the United States of America. |
